MLWGS Hosts FIRST Lego League Tournament

Maggie Walker’s FIRST Robotics Team #422 hosted its 8th annual FIRST Lego League Regional Qualifying Tournament on Saturday, November 7 at MLWGS. The vision of FIRST (For Inspiration and Research in Science and Technology) is “to transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes.” FIRST Lego League, for ages 9-14, introduces young students to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic based playing surface. FLL teams, guided by their imaginations and adult coaches, discover career possibilities, and through the process, research real challenges facing today’s scientists. The 2009 FLL Challenge, Smart Move: Transforming Transportation, required teams to transform the way we look at transportation of people, places, goods, and services in the safest, most efficient way possible. Of the 20 teams from area elementary and middle schools that competed, six teams advanced to the state tournament at JMU to be held in December. Many thanks to MLWGS administration and the many student and parent volunteers who helped organize and execute the tournament. This event showcases our school and is often the first introduction these young students have to Maggie Walker. Thank you!
