Fighting Hunger One Seedling At a Time

Dear MLWGS Community,

As many of you may know, the 13th annual Governor’s School Model United Nations Conference (GSMUN) will be held March 26-27. I am honored to be serving as Director of Charitable Giving this year, because it has given me the opportunity to champion a cause that has prevalence not only within the wider global community, but also in our local communities: hunger awareness. Thus, this year, the Model UN Club has adopted Action Against Hunger, a nonprofit organization that fights hunger in some 40 countries worldwide, to be the recipient of our conference’s fundraising efforts.

To complement these efforts, I have also cultivated another burgeoning passion of mine – gardening. Like fundraising, gardening has its limitations, its difficulties, and certainly suffers from a “dry season” now and again. Still, one of the most valuable things I have learned from this experience is that, just like placing a seedling in the ground, planting the seeds for change requires a certain amount of trust in Mother Nature as well as in human nature. In this spirit, I have founded Maggie Walker’s first community vegetable garden with the generous help and support of Mrs. Lynne Carruth of the school landscaping committee. This garden, located at the Lee Street entrance of the school, will teach our students about the value of sustainable growth, the ability that we have to cultivate and produce our own food in an environmentally friendly way, and the opportunity gardening gives us to give back to the communities in which we live. The vegetables grown will be donated to the Central Virginia Food Bank through the Plant-a-Row for the Hungry Campaign (PAR).

We are in need of financial support as well as donations of plants and gardening materials. If you would like to contribute, please write a check to the Maggie Walker PTSA with “community garden” written in the memo. Also, donations of any kind are much appreciated!

Thank you so much for your support as you join us in taking Action Against Hunger!

Sincerely,

Ishani Premaratne
