MLW Essay Contest Results

Johnny Mac Yates won first place and Emily Sloane received an honorable mention for the essay contest on Maggie L. Walker that called for students to draw connections between the tribulations that Walker faced during her lifetime and the many changes the building has endured, from a segregated high school to a regional Governor’s School. “The work ethic needed to succeed at MLWGS exemplifies Maggie Walker’s own determination,” stated Yates. The MLW Civic Society invited Dorothy Rice, co-author of Pennies to Dollars: The Story of Maggie Lena Walker, to share insight and poetry during a luncheon in which the winners were recognized.
