ASL Act of Giving

The Maggie Walker Governor’s School is often noted in the news for winning a competition or bringing home a trophy of some kind, but recently the American Sign Language Club won in a different way. They won through the act of giving. On Friday, April 23, the MLWGS ASL Club and ASL Honor Society hosted a lovely reception for ten members of the Deaf Senior Citizens of Richmond, where our students donated $900 to the DSCR–an unprecedented and much-appreciated gift. The DSCR hopes one day to build a retirement facility that will provide a safe and totally accessible space for deaf retirees. Our students worked hard to earn the money as a way of giving back to the community that has over the years been a great resource for and supporter of the sign language program here at Maggie Walker. We can all be very proud of the kindness and community-mindedness of these fine young students.
