Creative Writing Contest Winner

Alex Zuercher, senior in Mrs. Yagel’s creative writing class, won the most recent school writing contest that called for students to bring to life the culture of India through poetry or prose. “I’m really fascinated by India and Hinduism,” says Alex.  His poem, “I am a rat catcher from Uttar Pradesh,” depicts the life of an ordinary working man who must wade through “rodent tunnels” to “dig for [his] supper.”  The poem describes the caste system through the eyes of an Untouchable, or, in the Indian caste system, one who is a social outcast.   Alex effectively illustrates themes of morbidity and alienation with the use of repetition and imagery.
