Important Information for the Class of 2010

To the Class of 2010 and their families: you are nearing the most exciting and bittersweet few days in your high school career! We want to recap the events and give you a bit more information. 
(1) Senior Picnic: Thursday, June 17, 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm, Byrd Park, Carillon Shelter
Remember to bring your assigned drink/chips/dessert/other if you have not already dropped it off at school. Sub sandwiches will be provided. Please bring extra tickets to graduation if you are not going to use them. If you need extras, you’ll be able to get them at that time! You are welcome to bring your yearbooks to get more signatures! You might also want to bring a camera, sunscreen, Frisbees, etc.

(2) Baccalaureate: Thursday, June 17, 6:30 pm First Presbyterian Church, 4602 Cary Street Road. Parking readily available. Map and directions can be found at: Sponsored by the MLWGS PTSA, the inter-faith service begins promptly at 6:30 pm and will last one hour. Students are not required to attend, but this traditional and memorable event celebrates finishing one chapter in your lives and beginning the next. Students should arrive no later than 6:15 pm for the procession line-up, and you are asked to dress appropriately and to bring both cap and gown.

(3) Faculty Lounge Lizards and The Core Collective Concert  Thursday, June 17, 8:00 pm  Dogwood Dell (Byrd Park). Dogwood Dell is located next to the Carillon in Byrd Park. It is on the stretch of road where the Boulevard turns into Blanton Street on the way to the “Nickel Bridge.” It is easily found by just going south on the Boulevard. The Dell is on the right immediately after S. Boulevard / Blanton takes a hard left.

(4) Graduation Rehearsal Friday, June 18, 8:45 am, Landmark Theater
Graduation rehearsal is held at the Landmark Theater. Seniors must arrive no later than 8:45 am and be downstairs and ready to begin rehearsal at 9:00 am. ANY STUDENT WHO MISSES REHEARSAL WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO WALK IN THE ACTUAL GRADUATION CEREMONY, so parents are asked to please work with your student to make sure he or she is there promptly. Practice is usually completed by 11:30 am or so, but given that we will take as long as needed to perfect the process, please do not plan anything that requires your student to leave early or be gone by a certain time. This time is crucial to the success of the Graduation Ceremony. Musical performers will stay after the main rehearsal for sound check and practice.

(5) Graduation! Friday, June 18, 3:00 pm, Landmark Theater
Graduates must arrive at the Landmark Theater by 2:00 pm, enter by the right front entrance and proceed immediately to the downstairs ballroom. This area is off limits to parents, relatives and friends; we appreciate your understanding in this. Cap, gown, and tassel are the most important items for the day, but students are asked to please dress appropriately: dark dress pants, collared shirt and tie for the young men, dresses for the young women. Perhaps the most important clothing decision for the day, however, is shoes. Dress shoes and socks for the boys and low-heeled dress shoes for the girls are the best choices; please, no “flip-flops” or athletic shoes. Additionally, any decorations on mortarboards are absolutely prohibited. Note: The “collar” that comes with the graduation gown will not be used.

Doors to the theater will open at 2:30 pm. Guests should enter through the front center doors and must have a ticket to attend graduation. Seating is not reserved. Handicap seating is available on the first level; please see one of the ushers at the door upon your arrival if you need special seating. Parking for graduation is available at the VCU parking deck for a minimal fee (entrances are on Cherry and Laurel Streets.) Please adhere to posted street parking signs as ticketing and towing are strictly enforced.

Photographs during the ceremony are only allowed from your seats. The Landmark will not permit us to spill into the aisles for this activity, and they enforce this quite seriously. However, Lifetouch will be taking pictures of each individual student on stage, and ordering information is available directly through their website at; the password is 2010dragons.

A reception sponsored by the PTSA will be held immediately after graduation in the Landmark Ballroom. We anticipate graduation activities to conclude by 6:00 pm.
