The Maggie Walker Governor’s School’s Academic Team took 3rd place the 2010 PACE National Scholastics Championship on June 5-6 at George Mason University in Fairfax. Sponsored by PACE (Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence) this prestigious tournament attracted 64 of the best Quizbowl teams in the nation.

The team was comprised of captain Greg Tito ’10 (Henrico), Sarah Angelo ’10 (Henrico), Tommy Casalaspi ’11 (Chesterfield), and John Roach ’11 (Chesterfield). The team is coached by Dr. John Barnes, who also teaches mathematics at Maggie Walker.

Just the weekend before, the team traveled to Chicago and won 1st place in the 2010 High School National Championship Tournament sponsored by the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT).

“This is a great group of students coached by an outstanding teacher,” said Maggie Walker Director Fred Morton. “To perform so well at two, back-to-back, national-level tournaments is a truly impressive achievement.”
