2010 Varsity Field Hockey Team are Regional Champions!
Many thanks to Deb Sawyer for providing the following recap about our fantastic team:
Our first game in the Regional Tournament was on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at Sports Quest against Thomas Dale at 5:30pm. We scored with 3 1/2 minutes left in the game to win 1-0.
Now we were squared against Monocan for a 7pm game on Wednesday, November 3, 2010. Down 3 goals at half, tied it up to go into overtime, another 15 minutes of grueling field hockey and it is still tied. Second overtime, 15 more minutes, we score off a corner after two penalties against Monocan. Time had run out yet as long as the ball does not leave the circle, you finish the corner. With no time left we put the ball in and celebrate a victory 4-3. We're GOING TO STATES!!!!
Friday the game to determine the Regional Champions, is against Cosby at 5:00pm. No score for the two thirty minute halves. Once again we go into overtime. Overtime in any game is played with 7 girls instead of 11 on the same field for 15 minutes. It is sudden death. With 2 seconds left in the first overtime, we score off a corner and are victorious.Score is 1-0. The Lady Dragons have just won the Regional Championships for the first time in the 20 years of the Governor's School.
On to States where the first game will be played on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 6:00pm at Sports Quest off of Genito Road. Admission is $8.00. Our opponent will be Mountain View High School.
The theme the whole year is 22 people, 1 goal. These girls on the 2010 Varsity Field Hockey team could not have played harder or stronger all season long. Their record is 20-1.
