Sophomore Wins MLWGS Poetry Out Loud Competition

The English Department congratulates sophomore Caitlin McTiernan, first place winner in the MLWGS Poetry Out Loud Competition. Caitlin will represent Maggie Walker in the regional competition at the Barksdale Theatre on February 17. If she wins that, she will go on to the state level and may then advance to the national level. Second place winner was Alexandra Howells, and third place was won by Merci Best. Each of the girls received a Barnes & Noble gift certificate courtesy of the Governor’s School Foundation.

Four English teachers, Ms. Arnold, Dr. Spencer, Ms. Surat, and Ms. Williams opted to run classroom contests by November 12 and served as judges for the school-wide contest on November 15. The other classroom winners were: Kevin Chen, Lily Hargis, Aateeb Khan, Sam Menchel, Abigail Simon, Monet Weldon, and Annie Wetzel. All participants received certificates of participation from the Poetry Out Loud National Competition. Dr. Wendy Ellis assisted the English teachers in judging the competition. Ms. Sharon Parker also helped as a prompter during the recitations. Caitlin’s English teacher, Dr. Spencer and school Poetry Out Loud coordinator, Ms. Surat, will accompany Caitlin to the regional competition.
