Spectacular Cross Country Season

The Green Dragon Girl's Cross Country team closed out their incredible 2010 VHSL season in spectacular fashion on November 13 at the State AAA Championships over the hilly Great Meadows 3.1 mile course in Warrenton, Virginia. Led by senior co-captain Anna Spiers' 5th place finish, the Lady Dragons placed three runners on the 15-member All State team, more that any other school, to finish second in the team standings for the second time in two years.

Joining Anna on the All State team were sophomore Rachel Galton (13th) and freshman Daisy Banta (14th). Sophomores Nemo Keller and Jessica Lull and juniors Lindsay Ardiff and Caroline Rose rounded out the Supergal's scoring runners.

With five of the top seven runners from last year's outstanding team graduated, 2010 was thought to be a rebuilding season for the girl's cross country program, but with three major Invitational Meet victories, a 13 win - 0 loss dual meet record, their 4th consecutive District team title, and 2nd place finishes to Midlothian in the Regional and State Championships, the Dragons appeared to have just reloaded.

"This year's team was relatively young, with only three seniors", said their 49-year veteran coach Jim Holdren, "but they were talented, enthusiastic, hard working, and led by two outstanding veteran co-captains, Anna Spiers and Madison Swart. It was definitely a winning combination. Only seven of our runners were allowed to toe the starting line at the season's State Championship finale, but all 27 girls helped shape this dream season. I couldn't be prouder of them all."
