As the senior counselors, we would like to inform you of the resources and coming events designed to acquaint you and your son or daughter with the college admissions process. Although this process may seem intimidating and stressful, we hope that we can provide the guidance and structure that will create a positive and productive outcome. Please review our spring schedule below.
February: Prepare for the SAT and explore Naviance
As we await College Kickoff (see below), it is a good time for juniors to visit the CollegeBoard website if they have not already done so. The CollegeBoard is the organization that conducts SAT and AP testing. Students will need to create an account with CollegeBoard that they will maintain throughout the remainder of high school. To begin, visit www.collegeboard.com. Students and parents may also wish to explore the School Counseling Department’s website. In addition to providing college admissions information, it provides access to Naviance. Students have already received their registration codes, and parents will receive theirs at College Kickoff.
Monday, February 28: College Kickoff for Juniors
College Kickoff signifies the official start of the college admissions process. This event will take place in the Maggie Walker auditorium from 12:30 pm to 3:10 pm on February 28 and it is required of all juniors. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend. During this program, juniors will receive an overview of the entire college process. A parent meet-and-greet sponsored by the PTSA will follow. A mailing will go out soon announcing the speakers and the specific topics. Please note that for those parents who are unable to attend this daytime program, there will be an evening program beginning at 6:30 pm, also on February 28, for parents of students in all classes. This program will focus on more general information about the college admission process.
Wednesday, March 2: Individual Meetings with Senior Counselors Begin
During the months of March and April, juniors will schedule college meetings with their senior counselor. These meetings will last approximately 40 minutes and parents are invited to attend. During the college meeting, we will discuss each student’s goals and academic program, as well as build a list of potential colleges. Senior counselors will help students devise a plan to research and/or visit these colleges and answer specific questions about the application process. Juniors can begin signing up for their college meetings now!
Rising seniors caseloads are as follows:
Penny Deck: Last names A – Mo
Susan Eschenroeder: Last names Mu – Z (Susan Eschenroeder is substituting until Spring Break while Rachel Loving is away on maternity leave).
While all of this information may seem overwhelming, we are confident that these programs will help you and your son or daughter feel prepared to apply to colleges in the 2011-2012 school year. We are also excited to tell you more about our college planning software, Naviance, during College Kickoff. Most importantly, we are looking forward to becoming better acquainted with your child and beginning this very important journey with him or her. Please contact us with any concerns or questions.
