Dear GSGIS Family,
We have become aware of a rumor that is circulating that I would like to clarify. The rumor indicates that we are removing “We The People” from Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School due to budget concerns. Nothing could be further from the truth.
At his request, Matt McGuire will take a year off from We The People during the 2012-2013 school year. This will allow Matt to spend quality time with his family during his son’s senior year in high school. Next year, we do intend to offer membership in “We The People” to Juniors and Seniors. We will field a team next year for the 2011-2012 school year.
It is important to note that over the last several years federal funding for the Center for Civic Education has been targeted. The Center is the national group that provides organizational support for “We The People”. Matt has informed me that the president's recent budget eliminated funding for the Center for Civic Education. This is not the first time that this has happened. In the past, the Center has successfully lobbied to have the funding reinserted as an earmark. However, the political climate is making this much more difficult to do given current financial challenges. It is possible that the "We the People" program could be canceled at the national level in the next few years (and possibly next year) due to federal budget cuts. If any of you have connections with our elected leaders or their staff in Congress, it would be helpful for you to contact them and ask them to insure that the federal budget continues to provide support for the Center for Civic Education and the “We The People” program.
“We The People” is a critical part of this school and directly connected to our mission. Matt has done an outstanding job building upon the great success that was established by Phil Sorrentino. The administration and staff will continue to support the efforts required to encourage this group not only next year but in future years. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact me.
