MLWGS Students Win Essay Competition

On Thursday, February 24, the Library of Virginia  hosted the awards ceremony for the third annual African American Trailblazers Essay Contest, a statewide competition. Both the Richmond Times- Dispatch and Capital One sponsored the program. Two Maggie Walker students were recognized in the high school division. Senior Samya Dyer won first place and received $500 for her essay on Nelson Mandela.    Freshman Daisy Banta received “Honorable Mention” for her essay on Roger Bannister.     Both students also received signed copies of Students on Strike: Jim Crow, Civil Rights, Brown, and Me, the memoir by John Stokes about Prince Edward County’s famous student-led protest. Samya is a student of Mrs. Williams and Daisy is in Ms. Surat’s English class. The winning essays were published in the Richmond Times-Dispatch last Sunday, February 27.
