Congratulations to Eileen Wang, Margaret Benson and John Darr, winners in this year’s PTA/PTSA Reflections Contest. Each student interpreted this year’s theme, Together We Can, in their particular artistic medium. Eileen Wang won top honors (Outstanding Interpretation) in the District competition with her literature entry, a poem titled The Timidity of Each Individual; the Strength of Assembly. Eileen also took second place (Award of Excellence) in the Virginia State Competition. Margaret Benson’s visual arts entry, Unity, an oil painting, won second place (Award of Excellence) on the District level. John Darr’s original musical composition, The Star in the Sea, also took second place (Award of Excellence) in Districts. Each student received a medal and a certificate to recognize their achievements.
The Reflections Contest has been held nationally each year for the last 30 years, encouraging millions of students across the nation and in American schools overseas to create works of art in six areas: literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts, film/video production and dance choreography. The competition begins each fall on the local level. All Maggie Walker students are encouraged to enter the 2011-2012 contest, which will focus on the theme, Diversity is ….”
