MLWGS Wins National History Competition

A team of four students from the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School won the National History Bowl held in Washington, DC on April 16. The team consists of seniors John “J.R.” Roach (Chesterfield) and Tommy Casalaspi (Chesterfield), along with junior Stephen Roach (Chesterfield) and freshman Vasa Clarke (Henrico).

Organized and directed by 19–time Jeopardy champion David Madden, the National History Bowl brought 72 teams together to compete, each qualifying by its performance at one of 32 state and regional competitions.

The Maggie Walker team, the Virginia state champion, went undefeated at 8-0, and was seeded number one after preliminary play. The team then sailed through the 16-team, single-elimination playoff round to secure the national title. MLWGS director, Fred Morton said, "This is a significant accomplishment for this team and our school. We are proud of them for their commitment and hard work to achieve a national title."

The team was an offshoot of, and sponsored by the school’s Academic Quiz Bowl team, coached by Dr. John Barnes, a math teacher at the school.
