"We The People" Team WINS National Competition

MLWGS: 2011 National We The People Champions
There was great excitement in the nation's capitol this past weekend as Maggie Walker’s “We the People” team represented Virginia at the We the People: The Citizen & The Constitution National Finals.  After two days of competition, Virginia was one of 10 teams to advance to the final third round of the National Championship in Washington, DC, yesterday, Monday, May 2nd.  Final standings were announced at a huge banquet with representatives from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the Northern Mariana Islands for more than 1,200 high school students.

Led by Maggie Walker social studies teacher, Matt McGuire, the following 17 seniors proudly claimed the gold medal for 1st place in the competition:

Olivia Baumann, Maggie Chambers, Charles Condro, Sarah Davidson, Molly Dawson, Logan Ferrell, Jason Kong, Roy Ma, Shannon Marwitz, Laura Merchant, Laura Merriman, Cole Pearce, Ishani Premarante, J.R. Roach, Kerry Sawyer, Carly Spraggins, Rosa Waters

"We the People" team members study a broad range of topics related to American government and constitutionalism and prepare for a simulated congressional hearing, during which judges ask questions and score units based on knowledge and articulation. The academic competition marked the end of months of study and hard-won victories at the congressional district and state levels.  For more information visit www.civiced.org.
