The Green Dragons opened their 2011 Cross-Country season Saturday, September 10 at the Newport News Invitational on a rain-soaked Newport News Park course. The Dragons split their boys' squad into three varsity teams and a JV team while the girls entered two varsity teams and a JV team.
Matt Pickering, Drew Anderson, and John Ziegler finished 4th, 6th, and 7th, respectively, in the 81-runner field to lead the varsity A team to victory. Alex Fleckenstein (15th), Scott Mallory (31st), Daniel Jagdmann (32nd), and Austin Koch (40th) rounded out the Dragon A team scorers. Joey Viray (28th), Wil Thomason (29th), and Andrew Tynes (32nd) led the boys' varsity B team to a 5th place finish and Michael Drash finished 16th to lead the C team to a 9th place finish. Sophomore Nathaniel Tombes led all runners across the finish line in the boys' JV race, followed closely by freshmen Patrick Wachter, Kenny Xu, Joseph Boyle, Matt Rucker, Scott Miller, Justin Wilck, and Eric Kim in 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 10th places, respectively, for a runaway victory.
Both the girls' varsity A and B teams and the JV team were victorious. Rachel Galton (4th), Daisy Banta (5th), Victoria Herrera (7th), Kelsey Miller (10th), Caroline Rose (12th), Lindsay Lickers (25th), and Liz Napps (30th) sealed the title for the A team. It should be noted that both Victoria Herera and Lindsay Lickers are freshmen. Julia Kuno (5th) and Sara Taylor (9th) led the varsity B team. Freshmen Coly Elhai (8th) and Libby Ebeling (12th) led the JV Lady Dragons.
The Dragons traveled east again a week later for the highly competitive William and Mary Invitational where the varsity girls, again led by Rachel Galton and Daisy Banta, finished second and the varsity boys led by Drew Anderson, John Ziegler, and Alex Fleckenstein finished fourth. For the second consecutive week, the Dragon boy's' and girls' JV teams dominated the competition, with Matt Rucker leading the boys and Sara Taylor the girls.
