Extended Learning Opportunities Announced by MLW School Counseling Office

Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars is a NASA based science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educational program for high school juniors in Virginia. This is a competitive program that allows high school juniors to take an engaging NASA-developed course using a Science Exploration theme. Based on course performance, Scholars may be selected to participate in an all expense paid, seven-day residential Summer Academy at NASA Langley Research Center. The 48th Annual Nancy Thorp Poetry Contest is sponsored by Hollins University for sophomore and junior girls. Students must submit their poem(s) in Microsoft Word online at www.hollins.edu/poetrycontest.  Deadline for entries is November 15, 2011. 

The Dominion Strong Men and Women Writing Contest is open to juniors and seniors. Students must submit a 350-word essay online about one of the more than 200 individuals featured in the Strong Men and Women Series. Deadline is November 7th.

High School Diplomats is a ten-day cultural exchange program between Japanese and American students. It is a full-scholarship program that gives 40 American sophomore and junior high school students the chance to build relationships with people from another country and learn another culture firsthand. HSD is a summer program like no other because it opens kids' eyes to a whole new perspective on the world, while also helping them learn more about themselves.
