The Green Dragons were edged by Westview HS of Fairfax County in sudden death OT last Tuesday during the VHSL State Quarterfinals at Sportsquest. The game was even closer than suggested by the final score of 2-1. Westview had more possession time and was very well organized. Maggie Walker played with greater speed and creativity and although fewer, their scoring chances were more dangerous.
The Dragons struck first, with senior co-captain Katy May swatting a bouncing ball into the net from 10 yards out. Senior co-captain forward Lane Scher went out of the game late in the first half with a cut to the forehead. Her speed and creativity were missed, tipping the balance to Westfield for the remainder of the game. The Dragon defense and senior goalkeeper Julia Whitehead were simply outstanding throughout the game, but Westfield found the goal late in the second half, forcing the OT.
Junior midfielder Megan Morris (1) befuddled defenses all year with her outstanding ball handling skills.
Colonial District Coach of the Year Paige Hawkins has much to be proud of. Her Green Dragons concluded an excellent 20-2 season, winning the Colonial District regular season and tournament, repeating as Central Region champions, and playing outstanding field hockey in the State Tournament. The team always played with grace, poise, grit and determination.
