MLWGS Director Search Update From the Search Committee

At our October 20th meeting, the Search Committee reaffirmed its intent to conduct this search in a manner that incorporates the input and involvement of the MLWGS community. To that end, the Search Committee, in consultation with the Regional Board, has decided to expand the Interview Committee.  The Search Committee Chair, collaborating with representatives of stakeholder groups, will identify one Foundation representative, one PTA representative, and one staff representative to serve on the Interview Panel.

As previously shared, the position is being re-advertised and the application deadline extended in order to expand the pool of qualified applicants. Candidates from the earlier cycle, as well as additional applicants from this new cycle, will be combined to create a larger pool for consideration.  Additional advertising will be placed in the National Association for Gifted Children’s Career Center, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum DevelopmentJob Board and the electronic Education Week Top SchoolJobs.


The revised timeline (which may be modified should additional time be needed) is as follows:
  • Application deadline:  December 5 or until the position is filled  
  • Screen applications using matrix:  December 7
  • Selection of interviewees:  December 9 – 16
  • First round of interviews January 3 – 6
  • Share names of  semi-finalists with Regional Board in closed session  (Jan. 19)
  • Final interviews  January 23-26
  • Recommendation(s) to Regional Board in closed session February 17th 
  • (Additional interviews if required)
Since the beginning of the school year is behind us, and much of the first semester, we may find ourselves in a better position to appeal to individuals considering a move in the 2012-2013 school year.


We again stress to all stakeholders that confidentiality is of the highest priority.  Highly qualified individuals who are sought after will not risk applying for another position amidst rumors that might jeopardize their employment in any way.  Participants in the search have signed an agreement to keep all information confidential.

Our focus is to secure a visionary leader who will work with students, parents, alumni, the community, staff, and school divisions. The Search Committee and the Regional Board appreciate the suggestions that have been provided by the Maggie Walker community who are so completely committed to the past, present, and future of this unique school.


In the meantime, we are grateful that Mr. Don Skeen has agreed to continue to serve as Interim Director during this extended search process.
