This year, Peer Mentors and the Maggie Walker Civic Society have been working to build their community by reaching out to young people. Students invited fourth graders from Carver Elementary School to learn about Maggie Walker’s legacy and her fundamental belief in financial autonomy. Ms. Ajena Rogers, park ranger from the the MLW National Historic Site, discussed Maggie Walker’s noted accomplishments despite overwhelming adversity. Ms. Sharon Grooms, banker from Premier Bank, shared ideas about how to save and manage money. To conclude the visit, students were able to “shop” and buy books and other items of interest. The success of this activity paves the way for future collaborative opportunities within the local community.
