Teacher Excellence Merits Award

MLWGS English teacher Lisa Williams, 2009 winner of the R.E.B. Award for Teaching Excellence, attended The Community Foundation luncheon held at The Jefferson Hotel. This is an annual event, in which select board members and grant recipients are recognized.

During the ceremony, Ms. Williams' journey was chronicled, and photos of Ghana and the American Midwest were featured, along with excerpts from her journal and final report. As an educator, Ms. Williams expressed that she wanted her students to make broader connections between themselves and the world around them and to confront the ultimate "gray" truths about important social and historical issues. She used discoveries from her travels to impact student learning, particularly in Genealogical and Sociological Research, a senior seminar that offered students the opportunity to trace their lineage.
