Maggie Walker’s overall performance in a recent international math modeling competition was the best of any school in the United States and second of all competing schools worldwide!
MLWGS was led by the team of Judy Hou ('12), Wil Thomason ('12), Arthur Wu ('12), and Melody Wang ('12), who received National Outstanding honors (top 2% in the world!) Additionally, MLWGS had four other teams garner Regional Outstanding honors that placed them in the top 14%.
In this COMAP-sponsored (Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications) contest, teams of four have 36 hours to write papers detailing how they would model one of two given real-world problems. One of this year’s problems involved NASA and its efforts to maintain the International Space Station, and the other asked teams to develop a plan for a search-and-rescue mission over a large area. A day-and-a-half’s worth of grueling effort resulted in papers that ranged from 20 to 30 pages in length.
Congratulations to all of the competitors!
