Civic Society Honors Maggie Walker's Memory

For three years, Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School students have worked to honor their school’s namesake, Maggie Lena Walker, by having a historical marker erected at her final resting place.

On Sunday, March 25, their hard work was realized with the dedication of a new state historical highway marker issued by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.

Standing by the new historical marker they helped erect (from left to right): Larry Walker('13), Lajuan Neal('12), Chelsi Dyer('13), Merci Best('13) and Kia Jordan('13)

Students installed the marker to highlight Walker’s prominent role as philanthropist, social activist, and America’s first female bank president. Student members of the Maggie L. Walker Civic Society worked hard to raise funds for the marker and participated proudly in Sunday's ceremony.

The dedication ceremony took place at Evergreen Cemetery. Speakers at the event included Ajena Rogers, of the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site, and Kathleen S. Kilpatrick, director, Virginia Department of Historic Resources.

The Maggie Walker Civic Society is co-sponsored by English Department Chair Lisa Williams and School Counselor Joy Davis.
