Model Congress Club Hosted 'Walker' Conference

The MLWGS Model Congress Club hosted a conference at Maggie Walker for middle school and high school students from the metro Richmond area on March 2nd - 3rd. The nearly two hundred attendees engaged in spirited discussions of contemporary issues as they served on various house and senate committees. Maggie Walker students chaired the committees – teaching parliamentary procedures, guiding discussion, encouraging civil discourse, and assisting with bill writing.

A highlight of the Walker Model Congress was the Saturday morning keynote speech by US House of Representatives Majority Leader Eric Cantor. The Q&A session following his speech was lively and broad ranging, with many students asking questions about tax policies, abortion, Iran, defense, and the budget. Students inquired further about conflicts between the Congressman’s personal views and those of his constituents and how he has approached them.  A final question addressed Congressman Cantor's responses to second guessing or regrets he may have experienced.

Congratulations to Nitin Nainani(’12), the director of the WMC, and his entire committee.
