International Language Month: MLWGS Students Recognized

Siobhan Rigby('12, Richmond) and Danielle Stephens ('12, Henrico) organized a two-day Festival of International Food at Maggie Walker March 14th -15th. The two leaders organized donations of over 700 portions of food from eleven cultures. The result of their hard work and the work of their volunteers was to send a check for almost $400 to the Food Bank of Virginia.

Earlier in the season, MLWGS hosted a Middle School Language Fair involving 80 students from 5 local middle schools. Rachel Johnson ('12, Richmond) and Justin Shawler ('12, Hanover) organized this event with guidance by Frau Grois. Maggie Walker students presented workshops in ten different languages to engage the visitors and to encourage their investigation of International Languages. 

The MLWGS International Languages department is pleased to announce individual awards: Shweta Tembe (’14, Henrico) has received a Global Citizen Scholarship covering the cost of a two-week immersion program at Concordia Villages in Minnesota. The National Spanish Exam has awarded at Junior Travel Award to Bobby Bohnke ( ’13, Henrico) that will pay for a ten-day tour of Mexico this summer. Eileen Wang (’12, Henrico) has been awarded an Allianz/Mondial Study Travel Award in addition to the French Honor Society travel award – one of ten in the country. Alumnus Dexter Gulick, (’08, Richmond) has received a scholarship offered by our Congress and the German Bundestag to study and do an internship in Germany for one year.
