Parent Volunteers Win Dragon Awards

Two school volunteers recently won PTSA recognition with special awards for their service during the year.

Kim Chiarchiaro received the Dragon’s Lair Award. This award is presented to a person who works behind the scenes, not necessarily in a leadership role.

As a freshman parent, Chiarchiaro started as the chairperson for The Dragon's Lair, the MLWGS school store. She chaperoned the freshman lock-in and also chaperoned the freshman field trip to the Virginia State Capital. She will round out the year by baking cupcakes for graduation.

Barbara Reese was given the Green Dragon Award. This award is presented to a visible and active member of the volunteer community.

Barbara began her volunteer activities with MLWGS as a writer for Connections, a quarterly newsletter designed to inform parents and others about issues and activities affecting the school. Barbara then dedicated her research and writing skills to seeking grants for the proposed athletic pavilion, which quickly transitioned to serving as president for the Maggie Walker Athletic Boosters since July 2010.  During her time as president, the pavilion became a reality, membership has grown, and communication with parents and other supporters of the sports teams has improved.
