New Contests and Awards Programs Announced

Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars is a NASA based science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educational program for high school juniors in Virginia. This is a competitive program that allows high school juniors to take an engaging NASA-developed course using a Science Exploration theme. Based on course performance, Scholars may be selected to participate in an all expense paid, seven-day residential Summer Academy at NASA Langley Research Center. The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership seminar program is offering one slot for a sophomore from MLWGS to attend an all-expenses paid seminar in the spring. If interested, please submit to Ms. Davis a 75–100 word essay describing the most rewarding and challenging aspect of being a school and community leader. The deadline for submission is Nov. 7.

The 49th Annual Nancy Thorp Poetry Contest is sponsored by Hollins University for sophomore and junior girls. Students must submit their poem(s) in Microsoft Word online at hollins.edu/poetrycontest. Deadline for entries is Nov. 15.

The Dominion Strong Men and Women Writing Contest is open to all high school students. Four essays will be chosen and students will receive a laptop computer. Interested students can click here for the essay prompt, find out more information, and submit their essay. The deadline is Friday, Nov. 16.

High School Diplomats is a ten-day cultural exchange program between Japanese and American students. It is a full-scholarship program that gives 40 American sophomore and junior high school students the chance to build relationships with people from another country and learn another culture firsthand.
