The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar Program is offering one slot for a sophomore from MLWGS to attend an all-expenses paid seminar in the spring. If interested, please submit a 75–100 word essay to Ms. Davis describing the most rewarding and challenging aspect of being a school and community leader. The deadline for submission is Nov. 7.
Summer Residential Governor’s Schools applications are now available. These programs are run by the Commonwealth to provide opportunities for gifted high school students to explore professional and university environments through mentorships and academic enrichment. Information and applications can be found here for academic, mentorship programs and visual and performing arts and here for the foreign language academies. Students interested in the foreign language academies or in the visual and performance arts programs should speak directly to their language or fine arts teacher ASAP. The 49th Annual Nancy Thorp Poetry Contest is sponsored by Hollins University for sophomore and junior girls. Students must submit their poem(s) in Microsoft Word online at hollins.edu/poetrycontest. Deadline for entries is Nov. 15, 2012.
The Dominion Strong Men and Women Writing Contest is open to all high school students. Four essays will be chosen and students will receive a laptop computer. Interested students can visit the website to see the essay prompt, find out more information, and submit their essay. The deadline is Friday, Nov. 16.
High School Diplomats is a ten-day cultural exchange program between Japanese and American students. It is a full-scholarship program that gives 40 American sophomore and junior high school students the chance to build relationships with people from another country and learn another culture firsthand. HSD opens students' eyes to a whole new perspective on the world, while also helping them learn more about themselves. Knowledge of the Japanese language is not required! Visit the website to apply.
