MLWGS Budget Threatened

The PTSA works to keep parents informed on significant matters affecting the Maggie L. Walker Governor's School, and would like to highlight an area that continues to concern the PTSA Advocacy Committee.

During the budgetary process for the 2012-2013 academic year, the school Regional School Board mandated a 5% reduction in student tuition paid to MLWGS. From the 2008-2009 academic year the total reduction has been over 12%. This compares to reductions in the lower single digits in the surrounding counties. In addition, MLWGS average teacher salaries have been flat since 2006-2007.

These reductions have the impact of potentially reducing the curriculum available to students and putting teachers and administrative staff salaries in a less competitive position than their colleagues in the surrounding area.

This year is shaping up to have additional budgetary pressures, and it is important to have parental input and action regarding funding levels. The timing of the budget process is accelerated this year, so immediate attention is needed to allow the 2013-2014 budget considerations to be properly vetted and feedback provided to local school boards as deemed appropriate.
