Lily Hargis ('14, Richmond) has won the Maggie Walker Poetry Out Loud (POL) Contest for the second year in a row. Congratulations also go to second-place winner Reshini Premaratne ('16, Henrico), and Jake Zaslav ('16, Richmond), third-place winner.
On Feb. 5, 2013, Hargis will compete in the regional competition, with a chance to go on from there to state and national levels, where the top prize is a $20,000 scholarship. Last year, Hargis won her regional competition to advance to the state level, where she was a finalist.
Each school competitor memorized and recited two poems from the official (POL) list. In all, seven classroom winners opted to participate this year. The other participants were all freshmen: Zoe Nelson, Ethan Cruikshank (Hanover), Virginia Chambers (Henrico), and Evan Heiter (Hanover).
Teachers whose classes participated this year included Dr. Janet Spencer, Michele Surat (coordinator), John Piersol, and Lisa Williams. Kerry Sheppard and Penny Deck assisted with judging. Thanks go to all students who competed in individual classes for their dedication and diligence in preserving the power of poetry in the world today.
