Maggie L. Walker's FIRST Robotics Team 422, the Mech Tech Dragons, hosted their 11th annual FIRST Lego League (FLL) Regional Tournament at the school on Saturday, Nov. 17. Over 170 elementary and middle school students, representing 26 teams from the central Virginia region, participated in the junior robotics competition. The Mech Techs, along with a crew of adult volunteers, worked as referees, score keepers, judges, emcees, and assistants to make the tournament a rousing success.

The tournament is the key community outreach effort of Team 422, inspiring area children to pursue their interests in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The Mech Techs also spearheaded a peanut butter drive for the Central Virginia Food Bank in conjunction with the FLL tournament, for which over 200 pounds of peanut butter were collected.

The team is led by officers Christine Gao (Chesterfield '13), Harrison Grinnan (Chesterfield '13), Lisa Li (Henrico '13), Jonas Rogers (Henrico '13), Matt Aldridge (Chesterfield '14), Zach Allen (Chesterfield '14), and Will Kunkel (Henrico '14) and led by parent volunteer and tournament coordinator Charlie Aldridge, administrative supporter Phil Tharp, faculty sponsor Harold Houghton, and Mr. Jeff McGee, host speaker.
