Nominations Sought for Teacher REB Awards

Cecilia Boswell would like some company. So would Jeff Hall, Lisa Williams, Denise Yagel, John Barnes, Kerry Sheppard and John Wilkes. These current MLWGS faculty members are all past winners of the prestigious R.E.B. Awards for Teaching Excellence, given annually to “identify, recognize and promote excellence in classroom teaching in [Richmond] area public schools.”

R.E.B. winners are provided with grants of $4,000-$12,000 to further their education outside the classroom. Ms. Boswell, whose award was announced in the fall, plans to study the ancient cultures of Greece and China this summer. Coach Hall, who teaches in the Fine Arts department, used his grant to study the art and architecture of Europe. Ms. Williams, head of the English department, traveled to Africa and the U.S. Midwest to explore the history of slavery and the Civil Rights movement.

Anyone may nominate a teacher for the award: student, parent, alumnus. The deadline for nominations is Thursday, Feb. 21, at 5:00pm. While instructions and the nomination form are available online
, the nomination must be submitted in hard copy form either through the U.S. Mail or by hand to the office of The Community Foundation, which administers the awards. No faxes or e-mails will be accepted.
