Public Education Advocacy Group Seeks Support

Tuesday, Feb. 19, is Capitol Day, which marks when students and parents will ship off to the General Assembly to advocate for public education, particularly for Virginia’s Governor’s Schools like Maggie Walker. Students and parents are welcome to join.

Friends of Virginia’s Governor’s Schools (FOVGS) has teamed up with EduPAC to schedule appointments with all 26 State Senators and Delegates whose districts feed into MLWGS. About half of those appointments have been filled with student delegations, and FOVGS is now seeking both student and parent constituents. Support can be offered in three ways:

Step 1: Check the list below to see which areas still need student representation (parent volunteers are needed from just about every area). For a full list of area legislators, visit the General Assembly website:

•Betsy Carr (Richmond, Chesterfield)
•John Cox (Hanover)
•Kirk Cox (Chesterfield)
•Rosalyn Dance (Chesterfield, Prince George, Petersburg)
•Keith Hodges (King & Queen)
•Delores McQuinn (Chesterfield, Henrico, Richmond)
•Richard Morris (Prince George)
•Joe Morrissey (Charles City, Henrico, Richmond)
•Chris Peace (Hanover, New Kent)
•Lee Ware (Chesterfield, Goochland, Powhatan)

 •Thomas Garrett (Goochland)
•Henry Marsh (Chesterfield, Petersburg, Prince George, Richmond)
•Ryan McDougle (Hanover)
•Donald McEachin (Charles City, Hanover, Henrico, Richmond)
•Frank Ruff (Prince George)

Interested students whose legislators are not on this list may team up with represented students so that there will be at least one constituent in each group.

Step 2: Fill this brief survey to stay updated along the way:

Step 3: Students may attend the EduPAC meeting on Monday, Feb. 11 in Room 228 (across from the Board Room on the 2nd Floor) to stay completely informed. Additionally, former Director Fred Morton and Capitol Day veteran Doug Scheibe will lead a training session after school in the forum on Monday, Feb. 11. Field trip forms are currently posted outside of the Foundation Office on the 2nd floor. Feel free to contact Matthew King at for more information.
