Students Fight Education Funding Cuts

On Tuesday, Jan. 29, Henrico County Public Schools held a public hearing at which the Henrico County School Board listened to public comments about the proposed 2013-2014 school budget. This budget includes a 3% funding decrease for MLWGS.

At the hearing, a group of MLWGS students and about twelve MLWGS parents voiced their concerns about the proposed funding decrease. MLWSG PTSA Advocacy received support from students who presented four-minute speeches at the hearing, after completing the diffcult last day of mid-term exams.

The following students, all from Henrico participated: Reshini Premaratne (‘16), Virginia Chambers (‘16), Debbie Mayo (‘15), Galen Green (‘15), Sam Schwartzkopf (‘15), Claire Panak (‘14), Gowri Buddiga (‘14), Yash Tekriwal (‘14), Mason Davenport (‘14), Matthew King (‘14), Gabi de Leon (‘13), Daniel Leibovic (‘13). Many parents who could not attend the hearing submitted their comments via email to the school board. Both WWBT-TV NBC and The Richmond Times Dispatch covered the hearing and included information about MLWGS.

The school board will vote on the proposed budget on Feb. 28.
