Junior Ranked in State Poetry Competition

Lily Hargis (Richmond '14) was named the state runner-up in the 2013 Virginia Poetry Out Loud contest. As runner-up, Hargis receives a $100 cash prize, and the school will receive a $200 stipend to purchase poetry books for the MLWGS library.

Hargis is also the designated alternate should winner Mimi Wack, of Fredericksburg, be unable to attend the national competition in Washington, DC on Apr. 28 - 30.

At the competition the fifteen regional winners recited two poems each, after which eight students advanced to recite a third poem in the final round. Hargis scored 100% accuracy for her recitations of Two Guitars by Victor Hernandez Cruz, At the Vietnam War Memorial by George Bilgere, and Experience by Edith Wharton.
