Senior Skates in National Championships

The weekend of Feb. 28 through Mar. 2 in Plymouth, Michigan, US Figure Skating held the US National Synchronized Skating Championships. Emily Sacks (Richmond '13) competed in the Junior division, the second-highest level in US Figure Skating disciplines. Her team, the Capitol Steps, represents the Washington Figure Skating Club in Washington, DC.

The team skated their short program to Michael Buble's "Feeling Good" on Thursday night and placed 10th. They competed their long program Friday night to Disney's "Fantasmic," finishing 10th overall. Their total event score for the national championships was 90 points.

The Capitol Steps Junior Synchronized Skating Team is made up of 16 high-level figure skaters from the DC metro area, all of whom are in high school. Sacks was invited to join nine months ago, after skating for 10 years with Richmond Synchro.

Synchronized skating teams comprise eight to 20 skaters, performing elements including blocks, circles, wheels, lines, intersections, spins and step sequences. For more information, visit
