Girls' Soccer Shines This Season

The MLWGS Girls' Soccer team’s season came to an end last Wednesday night, as the Dragons fell to the number two seed Freeman Rebels in the semifinals of the Colonial District Tournament.

The 2013 season was one of the most successful seasons for the girls soccer program in the school’s history. The team combined balanced scoring with a stout defense, while competing in the always-competitive Colonial District.  The Lady Dragons finished with a 9-5-2 record, and sole possession of third place in the district.
Senior Sarah Boegner (Henrico) led the team in scoring with 19 goals while  Maeve Healy (Henrico '14), and Tessa Guinn (Henrico '15) helped to anchor a solid defense, and all three were recognized for their efforts by being named to the Colonial District first team. In addition, Margaret Graham (Petersburg '15) and Haley Herrmann (Goochland '14) were named to the 2nd Team All District and Mariah Macon (Richmond '15) and Maddie Miles (Hanover '14) received Honorable Mention honors.

Coach Ian Kelley says of the team, "This is by far the most successful season we've had and the future only looks brighter. The team was able to shut out Godwin twice, go neck and neck with Freeman, and hold Deep Run to only two goals, meanwhile putting defeats over all the other district teams. The girls continuously strive to be better, and their dedication to advancing the program is unparalleled. I couldn't be happier coaching anywhere else, and I certainly would never want to after the past four years."

This year's team will graduate five seniors: Sarah Boegner, Alia Prasad, Kendall Huennekens, Nemo Keller, and Natalie Lohr.
