New PTSA President Welcomes MLWGS Families

The PTSA extends a warm welcome to new and returning students, families, faculty and staff. We hope you are returning from a fun and rejuvenating summer and that everyone is ready for another outstanding school year at Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School!

Our weekly email newsletter, Smoke and Scales, is the backbone of communications at MLWGS, and we are so grateful to have Jay Alexander and Phaedra Hise returning as editors this year. These dedicated volunteers have made a special commitment to keep families informed and up to date about all the latest Dragon happenings. Subscribe by going to the PTSA Weekly Newsletter Subscription Form found on the Smoke and Scales page on the MLWGS website. Don’t forget to click on your “S&S” link each Tuesday, and please contribute news items as well! Please consult the submission guidelines link at the bottom of S&S.

We encourage you to regularly check the school calendar and invite you to visit the PTSA section of the MLWGS website to learn more about the many programs and to find contact information for all PTSA officers, committee chairs, booster club reps and class parent reps.

We also utilize Facebook to post event information, student happenings and daily announcements. Visit and like the page at

We thank our many enthusiastic and dedicated parent volunteers who are already giving generously of their time, talents, and resources to make possible the communications, major events, programs, and overall support for our school. We depend upon parents and MLWGS supporters to keep the PTSA a strong and vibrant organization, partnering with you in the shared goal of enriching students’ educational and personal development.

If you haven’t already done so, please look carefully through the information provided in the student back to school packet. There are many pages to read and digest, but the information is vital in facilitating your family’s connection to Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School. We would like to thank Sharon Soldan and her team for creating the packets. Each family has also received a 2013-2014 Student Directory. Thank you to Bruce Carney and Shelley Allen for creating this invaluable resource for every MLWGS family. The MLWGS PTSA looks forward to working closely with you and to your participation in the 2013-2014 school year.

Best wishes for a successful year!
