January and February will be busy months for the PTSA Advocacy Committee. The full engagement and support of the school community will be key to meeting the many challenges the Committee faces at the state and local level.
The 2014 Virginia General Assembly convenes on Jan. 8. The Committee will be calling on the community to support a budget amendment to increase funding for full-time Governor's Schools. The Committee asks parents to take the time now to identify state representatives using the Who's My Legislator? program on the Virginia General Assembly website. A wealth of information on the budget process in Virginia is located on the same website. Please be on the lookout for communications from the Advocacy Committee in January and February. The Committee will provide sample letters and talking points to send to legislators. These issues are time-sensitive, so please respond promptly.
On the local front, on Jan. 16 and Feb. 20 the MLWGS Regional School Board will hold budget workshops to consider the proposed school budget. They expect to have a budget to present to local school boards by the end of February. Please mark calendars now to attend these meetings, which will be held at 9:00am in Room 153. It is important for school board members to receive input from constituents about the funding crisis at Maggie Walker.
Please pay attention to the Director's Updates on the budget. For help understanding the issues, please contact PTSA Advocacy. Advocacy will provide talking points to community members prior to both meetings. In the interim, review past budgets on the school website to gain insights about the substantial cuts in funding from localities since 2009.
