Freshman Wins School Poetry Out Loud Contest

The English Department wishes to congratulate freshman Naomi Vickers who recently won the MLWGS school-wide Poetry Out Loud competition. Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry recitation competition. Naomi will represent MLWGS in the Region 5b competition on Feb. 13. If Naomi wins the regional, she will go on to the state level. The final step is the national competition held in Washington, DC. The national competition’s first place winner is eligible for a $20,000 college scholarship.

A close second place winner was last year’s school winner, Lily Hargis (Richmond '14), followed by third place winner, Sarah Law (Chesterfield '17). Emma Greene (Henrico '15), Shreya Shetty (Henrico '17), and Caroline Pridgen (Chesterfield '17) were the other classroom winners this year.

Ms. Michele Surat coordinated the school wide event. English teachers Janet Spencer, Kerry Sheppard, and John Piersol assisted with judging. A total of about 200 students participated in the classroom competitions.
