The Governor introduced a proposed budget for the 2014 - 2016 biennium in mid-December. The following language ordering a Department of Education study of funding for Governor's Schools was included in the introduced budget:
F. The Secretary of Education, with the support of the Department of Education, shall conduct a study of the formula used to determine governor’s school payments. The study shall include, but not be limited to, consideration of the length of the program, appropriate state and local shares, and the academic model used by governor’s schools in the configuration of the funding formula.
Budget amendments based on the 9/6th proposal to increase funding for full-day, high school diploma Governor's School have been filed in the Senate and House of Delegates. The Advocacy Committee will be calling on the MLWGS community to urge state legislators to support these budget amendments. Interested supporters should identify their state representatives using the Who's My Legislator? program on the Virginia General Assembly website. A wealth of information on the budget process in Virginia is located on the same website.
Please be on the lookout for communications from the Advocacy Committee in January and February. The group will provide sample letters and talking points to send to legislators. These issues are time-sensitive, so please respond promptly.
