Freshman Competes in Poetry Out Loud Regionals

Nearly two hundred Maggie Walker students participated this year in Poetry Out Loud, a National Recitation Contest. Funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Virginia Commission for the Arts, Poetry Out Loud exists to “promote the art of poetry not only in schools but also in the community.” The MLWGS school winner, freshman Naomi Vickers, recited her poems on Thurs, Feb. 20 in the Region 5b competition. Engaging and expressive, Vickers' delivery showed that she believed in the words that she shared with her audience.

A senior from St. Christopher’s School, Saunders Ruffin, placed first and Sheniah Williams of Varina High School came in second in the contest. Though she did not win, Vickers embraced the chance to compete and says she is “ready for next year." She will be competing in forensic competitions later this spring.
