Seniors Present Findings to MLB

On Mar. 13 , five MLWGS students participated in the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) Analytics Conference’s Diamond Dollars Competition in Phoenix, AZ. The students were asked to develop a mathematical method they could use to rank the top three MLB pitchers by dollar value to their team.

Their solution involved a complex regression model that was fed into a Monte Carlo simulation that simulated 1.5 million baseball seasons. The team competed in the undergraduate division – the only high-school students in the competition – and they presented their findings to MLB front office executives from the Nationals, Phillies and Rockies. In addition, they were motivated by a pep talk video from Cleveland Indians prospect Will Roberts (’08).

The team consisted of seniors Alex Fleckenstein (Richmond), Joby George (Chesterfield), Austin Koch (Henrico), Ben Rasich (Henrico) and Richard Schweiker (Richmond).
