Week of September 30, 2014

Fall Festival is Friday, October 10, 4-8pm (rain date October 17)

Sharing is Caring: Lend an Item – or a Hand!

On Friday, October 10, the front lawn and drive of MLWGS will be transformed into a Global Celebration, with four full hours of entertainment, activities and eating opportunities. To make the festival happen, the MLWGS community is asked to lend (or give) various essential items, such as pop-up tents and wheeled coolers.

Please mark items to be returned with name, e-mail address or cell phone number, and colorful duct tape.

Additionally, organizers need assistance with set-up during the day and breaking down the stage after the music ends. For students looking for community service hours, stage breakdown is a great way to earn them!

Kid Zone returns!

After a successful debut at last year’s Fall Festival, this year’s MLWGS Fall Festival will see the return of the Kid Zone, a special area devoted to children ages 10 and younger.

In the Kid Zone, mini-Dragons will be able to play games, make a fall ornament and other crafts, including a paper lantern courtesy of InLight Richmond. Back by popular demand, Nutzy, the mascot of the Richmond Flying Squirrels, plans to visit the festival for a second year. Look for Nutzy to roam the school grounds 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Avoid the lines…Purchase festival tickets in advance!
As a reminder: All purchases at the fall festival will require tickets sold by the PTSA. There are two ways to obtain tickets: stand in line at the festival, or purchase them in advance, using the following form:https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bx4f6ZhqrWcYSXFDRzlWZkF0OEk/edit?usp=sharing.

Tickets will also be sold at school during lunch October 7 and 8. All tickets will be picked up at the festival; no tickets will be distributed early.

October Senior Newsletter Now Available

Attention Senior Parents and Guardians! The October Senior Newsletter is now available on the School Counseling Website (https://sites.google.com/a/gsgis.k12.va.us/mlw-school-counseling/2011-2012-newsletters). This newsletter contains college-related reminders and a listing of scholarships with approaching deadlines. The newsletter was distributed to students in their English classes last week.

Scholarship information for seniors is also available on the School Counseling website (https://sites.google.com/a/gsgis.k12.va.us/mlw-school-counseling/college-admissions-information-1/scholarships-financial-aid) and in Naviance (https://connection.naviance.com/mlwgs). Contact the student’s counselor to receive a registration code to view the Naviance scholarship database. Scholarships are still being added to this database on a monthly basis, most with direct links to the applications. Hard-copy applications are scanned and attached to the scholarship description as a PDF. Please note that all deadlines posted on Naviance or in the Newsletter are subject to change as organizations are still sending MLWGS updated information for this school year. Check the organization’s website for the most current information. Please contact Rachel Loving in the School Counseling Office with scholarship questions.

Attention all Class of 2015 parents/guardians!

The senior class is running a carnival-themed Fall Festival booth this year, featuring the Duck Pond game.  The prize for selecting a winning duck is a $5 or $10 gift card.  The Class of 2015 needs help!  Please send in $5 and/or $10 gift cards to various restaurants and stores with students by Thursday, October 9th.  The class officers expect the booth to be very popular, so all gift cards are much appreciated!  Cards can be turned in to any class officer or Ms. Sheppard.
