CELIE BOSWELL WINS THIRD ANNUAL PAT TAYLOR TEACHING AWARD

The 2015 Patricia E. Taylor Teaching Award for International Experiences is presented this year to Celie Boswell, a member of the English Department.  Celie will travel to South Africa, Swaziland, Botswana, and Zimbabwe to experience the landscape, geography, history, cuisine, music, art, and other cultural expressions distinctive of sub-Saharan Africa as well as the political and cultural aftermath of European colonial imperialism.  Her excursion combines landscape and wildlife game-viewing in historic parks, lagoons, and estuaries with exploration of cities and townships, scarred by, yet moving beyond the legacy of Apartheid.

The annual award, made possible by generous designated donations to the Governor’s School Foundation, provides up to $7500 for a MLWGS teacher to design and embark on a summer trip abroad that will directly impact his or her classroom instruction.  If you would like to help another  MLWGS teacher bring the world to the classroom, please contact the Foundation for information.

THE PLAY IS CAST!

MLWGS Drama has completed auditions and cast its spring musical production, Into The Woods.  The cast and crew are very excited to begin work on the show as soon as exams are over.  Rehearsals will begin in late January, and set building starts the first weekend in February.  And it is not too late to get involved!  For every production, the drama team needs volunteers to help backstage, work with costumes, hair and makeup, and set building.  Anyone who needs community service hours and is looking for a fun way to get them, check it out.  See stage manager Abby Dallas, ASM Emma Bilski, or Drama Sponsor Carol Piersol.  For more info, check out the drama site at https://sites.google.com/site/maggielwalkerdrama/rehearsal-reports  or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/9492101233/10152662283906234/?ref=notif&notif_t=group_activity

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE CLUB COIN DRIVE

Left: Elizabeth Benos, Right: Shannon Colson
Before the holidays, the American Sign Language Club held a coin drive to support deaf children in need. The club collectively raised more 200 dollars for needy children and families, and club officers, Shelbie Dunivan (’16 Henrico), Elizabeth Benos (’17 Chesterfield), and Shannon Colson (’17, Henrico) were able to buy gifts on behalf of the club for deaf children in need this holiday season.

Benos commented: “It was definitely a rewarding experience because we know that we are making a difference in these young children’s lives for the holidays, when times may be especially tough.”
