FROM THE COUNSELING DEPARTMENT
OPPORTUNITY FOR ADD/ADHD STUDENTS

Recently the MLWGS School Counseling department met with VCU Associate Professor of Psychology Dr. Joshua Langberg.  Dr. Langberg is the co-director of the ADHD clinic within the VCU Center for Psychological Services and Development.  He informed the counseling department that faculty in the Department of Psychology at VCU have a grant to provide free group intervention services for parents of high school students with ADD/ADHD. During the 8-session group, parents and students will learn strategies for improving homework, organization, time-management, and planning skills and how best to communicate about these issues. The group is called Strengthening Teens' Academic Needs Daily (STAND) and will begin in the fall 2016.  A previous diagnosis of ADD/ADHD is not required as all families will complete an evaluation to determine study eligibility. All families will receive a report detailing the evaluation findings and $50 for their time and effort regardless of eligibility.

If interested in learning more about these services, please call (804) 828-4254.

MAY 4 GENERAL PTSA MEETING

The final General PTSA meeting for the 2015-2016 school year will be hosted by Dr. Michael Southam-Gerow, a Maggie Walker parent, as he educates us on the important topic of Stress and Anxiety Management in Youth.  The meeting will be held on May 4 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium at Maggie Walker.  There will be prepared remarks and time for Q&A.  This was a very insightful program last year and we specifically scheduled it for the evening time slot to allow for strong parent participation.

Dr. Michael Southam-Gerow is Associate Chair and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Psychology at VCU and the Co-Director of the Anxiety Clinic at VCU. He received his bachelor’s degree at the University of Michigan and his PhD at Temple University in Philadelphia.
