PLEASE TAKE THIS SURVEY

As guided by our school technology plan, Maggie L. Walker Governor's School conducts regular surveys to determine the most appropriate technology to support active student-centered classrooms, professional development, and course offerings. To that end, this survey is designed to seek valuable input from all stakeholders: students, faculty, staff, and parents on the current state of instructional technology at Maggie Walker.

This survey will close on October 22, 2017.

We thank you in advance for your input on this brief survey.

SUPPORT THE MLWGS PTSA AND ORDER SCRIP FOR THE HOLIDAYS

It is not too early to start thinking about the winter holidays! Sponsored by the MLWGS PTSA, SCRIP is holiday fundraiser that allows parents and other school supporters to purchase gift cards for themselves, friends, and loved ones to favorite stores, services, and restaurants with MLWGS receiving a percentage of the sale. The gift cards are worth their full face value and cost nothing extra. Gift cards make great stocking stuffers and teacher gifts and are easily mailed to family and friends without the hassle and shipping costs of other holiday presents.

Order forms can be obtained two ways: downloaded here or accessed on the MLWGS website by going to "Community," then choosing the "PTSA and Booster Groups" option. Two orders will be placed for this holiday season, on November 10 with delivery by November 21 and December 4 with delivery by December 13. Orders can be dropped off in the SCRIP drop box located in Office 100 off of the Bluestone lobby and will be delivered during lunch to your student. The complete SCRIP “List of Retailers” can be found on the MLWGS website and displays all gift card options including additional local and non-local retailers and card amounts not listed on the abbreviated MW order form.

Questions? Please contact Lori Bekenstein at 364-7026 or 543-2376 or lori.bek@verizon.net

ATTENTION SOPHOMORES

Virginia Space Coast Scholars (VSCS) is a program focusing on the earth and airborne science, engineering, and technology integral to current missions at NASA Wallops Flight Facility and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport. This dynamic (and FREE) program, designed by the Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC), inspires students who possess technical and/or scientific interests and are motivated to learn about the many different opportunities that NASA offers. The VSCS program features two key elements: an online science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning experience featuring five modules and a seven-day residential Summer Academy at NASA Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, VA where selected scholars will learn first-hand from NASA professionals about cutting edge technologies and missions. Please visit http://vscs.spacegrant.org/ for additional information and application.
The deadline for student applications is November 12, 2017.

ATTENTION SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS

Each summer for over 30 years, the High School Diplomat Program has offered 40 American students a full scholarship to attend a 10-day cultural exchange program on the campus of Princeton University. All students that complete the program are then eligible to apply the following year for a 3-week program in Japan. For additional information and to apply, please visit http://www.highschooldiplomats.com/.

ATTENTION JUNIORS AND SENIORS

The Society of Women Engineers at the University of Virginia invites high school juniors and seniors to apply to our High School Visitation program on Saturday, November 18, 2017. The program gives young women a comprehensive look at engineering fields and UVA’s engineering curriculum through informative speakers and hands-on design activities. The program is designed to benefit participants with all levels of engineering experience, but we particularly target those students who are not yet familiar with the field and may be interested in applying to engineering schools or pursuing a STEM career.

To apply, students should complete the HSV Fall 2017 Application which can be found here. This fall session particularly targets high school seniors, but sophomores and juniors can also apply. Students who have previously applied to HSV, are in the targeted grade level, and demonstrate a strong interest in engineering through their essay will receive priority acceptance and priority consideration for an overnight stay. The attached flier provides more information about the event and instructions on how to apply online through our website.
The application must be completed online by 11:59 pm on Saturday, October 21, 2017.

Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars (VASTS) is an interactive online learning course with a space mission design and human space flight theme, culminating in a one-week residential Summer Academy at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton for those students who qualify. Offered at no cost to the student, VASTS consists of seven modules and a final project to be completed from November 2017 through May 2018 under the guidance of licensed master educators. Based on success in the online coursework, students may be selected to attend a Summer Academy where they interact with NASA scientists, engineers and technologists to design a human mission to Mars. Additional information and application can be found at http://vsgc.odu.edu/VASTS/
The deadline for student applications is November 12, 2017.

Virginia Earth System Science Scholars (VESSS) is an interactive, online Earth System Science Course featuring NASA scientific research and data. The course is offered for dual enrollment college credit (statewide through TNCC) for high school juniors and seniors in the Spring semester 2018. VESSS will have two components. The first component is an online sixteen-week course running from December through April. The second component is a residential NASA Summer Academy at NASA Langley Research Center for students who perform well in the course. Additional information and application can be found at http://vsgc.odu.edu/VESSS/
The deadline for student applications is November 12, 2017.

NEWS FROM THE COUNSELING DEPARTMENT

The school staff at Maggie Walker have long recognized that our students have needs beyond the academic. In order for students to be well rounded and ready for life after high school, their social-emotional health must be supported as well. School psychology services were added to the Counseling Department last school year in order to make further assistance available to students. Lisa Ebeling has joined the counseling staff this year as our school psychologist.

Mrs. Ebeling has over 20 years of experience in school psychology as a former Chesterfield County Public Schools employee. She spent the last nine years of her career in Chesterfield assigned to Crestwood Elementary and James River High School. In addition to her professional background, Mrs. Ebeling is also the parent of a 2015 graduate of Maggie Walker which adds to her understanding of the school. Mrs. Ebeling is thrilled to be at MLWGS and welcomes referrals from students, staff, and parents. She works Tuesday- Thursday and can be reached at 354-6800 x 3260 or by email at lebeling@gsgis.k12.va.us.
