MLWGS REGIONAL SCHOOL BOARD MEETING AND
FY18 BUDGET PUBLIC HEARING
MARCH 16, 2017
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Maggie Walker Governor's School Regional Board will be held on March 16, 2017, 9:00 a.m., in Room 153, on the MLWGS campus. A public hearing on the FY18 budget proposal is also included in this meeting.
Persons wishing to address the Regional School Board are required to contact the Board Clerk for placement on the agenda. In order to address the Regional School Board, the speaker must provide the Clerk with a summary of his/her comments by 10:00 a.m. on the last business day prior to the meeting at which he or she desires to be heard.

In lieu of comments during the public hearing, the Regional School Board will also accept input via online comments here through April 15, 2017. Comments should pertain to the FY18 proposed budget only; inappropriate remarks will be removed.
MLWGS GENERAL PTSA MEETING – COLLEGE OVERVIEW
Please plan to attend the March General PTSA meeting on
Monday, March 20 from 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. in Room 153 at MLWGS.
The meeting is open to parents of all students, but is especially geared
toward parents of Freshman and Sophomores, so that they can help plan
schedules, activities, clubs, community service etc. to best fit their student's
interests and college goals. The Senior Class Counselors, Penny Deck and
Rachael Loving, will provide an overview of the
college search/application/admission process at Maggie Walker and
offer an opportunity for a few questions. The counselors at Maggie Walker
are fabulous; don't miss this informative session!
ATTENTION SENIOR PARENTS!
The March Senior Newsletter is now available on the School Counseling Website (https://sites.google.com/a/gsgis.k12.va.us/mlw-school-counseling/2011-2012-newsletters). This newsletter contains college-related reminders and a listing of scholarships with approaching deadlines. The latest newsletter was distributed to students in their English classes last week. Scholarship information for seniors is also available on the School Counseling website (https://sites.google.com/a/gsgis.k12.va.us/mlw-school-counseling/college-admissions-information-1/scholarships-financial-aid) and in Naviance (https://connection.naviance.com/mlwgs). Contact your child’s counselor if you would like to view the Naviance scholarship database and need your registration code. Scholarships are still being added to this database on a monthly basis, most with direct links to the applications. Hard-copy applications are scanned and attached to the scholarship description as a PDF. Please note that all deadlines posted on Naviance or in the Newsletter are subject to change as organizations are still sending us updated information for this school year. Check the organization’s website for the most current information. Please contact Rachel Loving in the School Counseling Office with scholarship questions.
THE ROBERT E. AND JACQUELINE POGUE SCHOLARSHIP
APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE!
The Robert E. and Jacquelyn Pogue Scholarship annually recognizes a Maggie Walker senior by an award of $3,000 per year for the first two years of their college experience. Selection criteria includes demonstration of a strong interest in the study of history, government and politics, an ability to achieve in a well-rounded academic program, proven leadership ability, and a strong commitment to community service. Financial need will be considered, although it is not a primary factor. Part I of the application can be picked up in the Counseling Office beginning March 21, 2017. An information session for interested seniors will be held Wednesday, March 21 in the College Center (Counseling Office) during lunch starting at 11:40. Please turn in Part I of the application to Dr. Loving by April 18 at 12:30 p.m. Semi-finalists will be given Part II of the application which will be due April 28 at 3:30 p.m. Finalists will be interviewed in mid-May.
GRANDPARENTS DAY
The Foundation is excited to announce its annual Grandparents Day on Friday, April 21! This is an afternoon event where we invite current students' grandparents (or other special family members and friends) to learn a little about our school, take a brief tour, and have a reception with their grandchildren. It's a popular event and a lot of fun!
The only way we can invite these special family members is if you provide their contact information! If you've provided this information in a previous school year, we already have that and can use it to contact your child's grandparents. If that information has changed and needs to be updated in any way, please email the changes.
Most importantly, if your child is a freshman and you’ve never sent any grandparent contact information from you, please email events@mlwgsfoundation.org with the following:
- Name and graduation year of your current student(s)
- Name(s) of all grandparents or special family members to invite
- Full street address with city, state, and ZIP code
- Current email address (if they routinely use email)
Printed invitations will be mailed to all invitees in a few weeks and followed up with an email reminder. If you're in touch with those family members soon, please ask them to save the date of April 21 for this special event!

MLWGS Math Modeling Team wins as the only high school team in the nation at the SABR Conference, March 9-11, 2017 in Phoenix
MUSICAL DRAGONS SHINE
Congratulations to Andrew Shin (’18, Henrico) for earning the 9th viola seat in the All State Orchestra based on his audition Saturday, February 25 at James Madison University. Qualifying for All State Orchestra is the pinnacle ensemble achievement for high school musicians. The All State Orchestra Event is April 6-8 at Colgan High School in Northern Virginia.
Congratulations too to Maggie Walker Orchestra students for their performance at the District Orchestra Assessment Festival March 9 at Short Pump Middle School. The Orchestra I class earned ratings of Excellent and Superior for an overall rating of Excellent, and the Orchestra II class earned ratings of straight Superiors for an overall rating of Superior on music of the highest grade of difficulty. Ensembles are adjudicated based on their performance of prepared titles and sight-reading (performing a piece of music as the first run-through without any prior rehearsal). The music performed is graded by degree of difficulty on a scale of I-VI, VI being the most difficult. Orchestra I performed grade IV and Orchestra II performed grade VI.
