TOWN HALL MEETING TONIGHT!

MLWGS will host a Town Hall-style meeting on Tuesday, December 6 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Forum Room* to solicit community input for the MLWGS FY2018 operating budget.  All are welcome to attend.

The Director will provide a brief overview of the fiscal planning timeline, then open up the floor to speakers.

Thank you for your ongoing support of MLWGS students and school.

*Note:  this meeting will be moved to the Auditorium if space dictates.

PAINT PARTY FUNDRAISER FOR SENIOR SEMINAR

Wednesday, December 7 from 6 – 8 p.m.

Come on out to Maggie Walker to make your own beautiful painting and support Middle East & North Africa (MENA) Senior Seminar students in their efforts to travel to Morocco; MENA seminar students are studying gender and culture in the Middle East and North Africa.

For the ticket price of $35, you get all materials required to create your painting on a canvas, instruction from a professional artist, food, and, of course, the opportunity to socialize in a laid-back environment. HELP NEEDED FOR NIGHT OF THE DRAGON!

The 15th Annual Night of the Dragon auction will be held Saturday, February 25, 2017 at the Hilton Hotel & Spa at Short Pump. This annual event is the largest fundraiser of the year and collectively benefits the students at MLWGS through activities provided by all of the booster groups, the PTSA, and the Governor’s School Foundation. In order to be a financial success, we need to collect approximately 375 donations of auction items. 

Please join our Solicitors’ Committee! Collecting 375 items will not be difficult with the help of a lot of people!! If we get 75 volunteers, it is only 5 items each! This year our webmaster, Norm Hill, has done an excellent job of moving the process away from spreadsheets and onto the web. This change makes it easy for solicitors to find suggestions for companies and individuals to contact from the comfort of their own home!

Most store inventory is currently available online, and The Lair continues to work towards building out the selection.  The holiday season is the perfect time of year to give online shopping a try with The Dragon’s Lair.

It’s not too late to order Class of 2017 graduation announcements!  Herff Jones is still accepting orders online. INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE ADMISSIONS INFORMATION

The Senior Counselors, Rachel Loving and Penny Deck, will be giving an overview of applying to colleges outside to US on Wednesday, December 14 at 11:40 in the Auditorium. Jack Miller, alum, and current Oxford student plans to join us to discuss the difference between applying to college in the US and the U.K.

ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS

The Joint Science Education Project (JSEP) and the Joint Antarctic School Expedition (JASE) programs are open to current juniors interested in science and exploring other cultures. Both programs and physically demanding and the JASE program requires participants to be fluent in Spanish. Travel, lodging, and meals are provided to participants free of cost. The University of Westminister is offering five full scholarships for high school seniors interested in attending the London International Summer School in 2017. Attention Rising Seniors!

The Cochrane Summer Economic Institute (CSEI) is an intensive four-week program open to all rising high school seniors from the greater Richmond area partners learning about the economy and entrepreneurship through a series of workshops by local business leaders and Collegiate faculty with an immersive group internship. Students commit to participating the last week of June and first three weeks of July and receive a $500 stipend. HELP RESTOCK THE GRATITUDE BOX

When a student or teacher would like to brighten someone’s day with “Thank you,” or a kind, encouraging, celebratory, or empathetic note, they can grab a card from the library’s Gratitude Box.

This has led to a happy problem: the MLWGS Library’s Gratitude Box is running low. 

If you’d like to help restock the box, Ms. DeGroat will gladly accept the following:

THE NIGHT OF THE DRAGON IS NOT ONLY A PARTY,

BUT A HUGE FUNDRAISER FOR MAGGIE WALKER!

The Fifteenth Annual Night of the Dragon Auction is Saturday evening, February 25, 2017 at the Short Pump Hilton Hotel and Spa. It promises to be an exciting evening of live and silent auctions, delicious food and spirits, beautiful music, and enjoyable conversation! This event directly benefits the students of the Maggie L. Walker Governor's School by providing major funding for the PTSA, Academic Boosters, Athletic Boosters, Drama Boosters, Music Boosters, Visual Arts Boosters and the Governor’s School Foundation.

Although students help out with the event, providing entertainment and support, the event is meant to be a fun night out for Maggie Walker parents, friends, alumni and staff! Tickets are sold in advance to attend, and wonderful items are donated by individuals and local businesses for auction. The Night of the Dragon Auction Committee is already hard at work planning for this year’s festivities. However, they cannot succeed without a lot of volunteers - and donations! Learn how you can help support this important event by coming to the next auction committee meeting, Wednesday November 9, at 5:30 p.m. in room 153.

MAGGIE WALKER DRAMA CLUB PRESENTS

THE TRAGEDY OF JULIUS CAESAR

by William Shakespeare and directed by Foster Solomon

November 17, 18 & 19 at 7:00 p.m.

Julius Caesar is one of the several plays written by Shakespeare based on true events from Roman history. Although the title is Julius Caesar, Caesar is not the most visible character in its action, appearing alive in only three scenes. Marcus Brutus speaks more than four times as many lines, and the central psychological drama of the play focuses on Brutus’ struggle between the conflicting demands of honor, patriotism, and friendship. 

This cast of 29 students is one of MLWGS’s largest casts ever, but there are even more students involved in the tech and stage crew.  Together, all have worked hard to bring this production to the Maggie Walker stage.  We hope to see you at the show!

Also, back by popular demand – STICKERS!!!!  Medium sized, round logo stickers are now back in stock.  Thank you for your patience while The Lair secured a new vendor.  Another favorite, the Large Pewter Ornament, is restocked and just in time for the coming holidays.  This is a perfect gift for Freshmen and graduating Seniors.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, November 3 from 4 -7 p.m. and Monday, November 7 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon.  Dr. McGee has sent MLWGS families a notice about using Signup Genius for conference registration.  The links and password are available in each student's Powerschool portal.  If you notice that a teacher you wanted to see either has a full schedule or is unavailable that day please email the teacher directly to schedule a phone conference.

COOKIE DONATIONS NEEDED - MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW

Do you remember the night you and your student came to the Maggie Walker information session?  Do you remember how hungry you were by the time it was over? Do you remember the inviting and delicious reception that followed the event?  Well, now is your chance to help others relive your experience!  The PTSA Hospitality Committee will be collecting packaged cookies to use on November 14, 15 and 16 at the Prospective Student Night events.

We will be collecting your donations on Friday November 11 from 8-8:45 a.m. in the Concession stand just off the Blue Stone lobby.

NIGHT OF THE DRAGON 2017

Mark your calendars, the 2017 “Night of the Dragon” is February 25, 2017 at the Short Pump Hilton!  Come support Maggie Walker by joining the committee to secure donations and then enjoy a wonderful night at the Short Pump Hilton on February 25, 2017.  The auction committee is organizing to make the event a fun (and profitable) night out for Maggie Walker parents, friends, alumni and staff.

The committee has hundreds of leads and points of contact for wonderful donations; too many to pursue all alone. On November 9 at 5:30 p.m. we will meet at MLWGS in room 153 to provide leads and points of contact.  

If making contacts or placing calls not your thing but you have a good idea or can make a donation – great! We are looking for sports packages, trips (vacation homes, hotels, restaurants, etc), baskets, spirits, etc. - anything people will desire enough to bid up the price.

HOLIDAY GIFT CARD ORDERS

It's time to place holiday gift card orders! Sponsored by the MLWGS PTSA, this easy-to-use fundraiser allows parents and other school supporters to purchase gift cards for their favorite retail stores, hotels, gas stations, and restaurants with MLWGS receiving a percentage of the sale. The MLWGS SCRIP card is worth its full face value, costs nothing extra to the purchaser, and makes a great holiday gift! There will be two opportunities this year to order gift cards for the holidays. If you place your order by November 7, your gift cards will be delivered on November 15. If you place your order by November 28, your cards will be delivered December 6/7. Orders are due to the SCRIP box in Valenta Williams' first floor office Room #100 by 2 p.m. each of the order dates. Order forms can be downloaded on the MLWGS website by selecting "Support" and then "PTSA and Booster Groups" or they can be picked up in Office #100. ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS

For high school juniors, Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars (VASTS) is an interactive on-line learning course with a space mission design and human space flight theme, culminating in a one-week residential Summer Academy at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton for those students who qualify. Offered at no cost to the student, VASTS consists of eight modules and a final project to be completed from November 2016 through May 2017 under the guidance of licensed master educators. Based on success in the online coursework, students may be selected to attend a Summer Academy where they interact with NASA scientists, engineers and technologists to design a human mission to Mars. For high school juniors and seniors, Virginia Earth System Science Scholars (VESSS) is an interactive, on-line Earth System Science Course featuring NASA scientific research and data. The course will be offered for dual enrollment college credit (statewide through TNCC) for high school juniors and seniors beginning in spring semester 2016. The Virginia Space Coast Scholars (VSCS) is a program for sophomores focusing on the earth and airborne science, engineering, and technology integral to current missions at NASA Wallops Flight Facility and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport. This dynamic (and FREE) program, designed by the Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC), inspires students who possess technical and/or scientific interests and are motivated to learn about the many different opportunities that NASA offers.

• On-line modules covering NASA aircraft, balloon, and sounding rocket missions launched or managed at Wallops Flight Facility
• On-line course runs from December 2016 through April 2017

Seniors! Do you still need to sit for your formal Yearbook portrait? If so, sign up outside Room 330 to be photographed FREE by Strawbridge, the official school photographer, on Monday, September 19. Please see Mr. White (mwhite@gsgis.k12.va.us) if you have questions.

Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors! Tuesday and Wednesday, September 20-21, are your picture days! All non-seniors will be called down to the Black Box during their English classes. To purchase portraits, students must pre-pay. Order forms are available from Ms. Bowman (Attendance, in the Blue Stone Lobby) and Mr. White (Room 330). Yearbooks are available for pre-purchase. Pick up an order form outside Room 121 or go to yearbookordercenter.com and enter the MLWGS order number (14632) to lock in the introductory rate of $45. Prices go up after Fall Festival.

The Dragon’s Lair would like to remind MLWGS friends and family that the store is open regularly on Tuesdays and Fridays during the lunch hour.  Prefer to stop by on the way to work?  No problem!  The Dragon’s Lair is also open for convenient morning shopping the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.  Checkout is quick and easy as the Dragon’s Lair is all electronic now! 

Visit the store to see the new and planned items, including holiday ornaments and bow ties and flannel pants with new designs. The Lair is also looking into a new blanket, polo shirt, sweat pants, ladies tee, tervis cup, stadium seat, flag, and alumni shirt.

The College Board reports delay

in PSAT score reports

The College Board sent an email on December 10, 2015 announcing that PSAT scores will not be available until January.  Students will receive an email from the College Board (sent to the email address bubbled in by students on PSAT day) with instructions on how to access scores digitally. The projected date for this email and score availability is January 7. 

The College Board is also sending paper score reports and anticipates delivery of reports to schools by January 29.  Once they arrive, the MLWGS Counseling Department will distribute these score reports and student answer booklets during lunch time assemblies.

Poetry Out Loud

Mary-Dryden Maio (’18, Richmond) is the 2015 Poetry Out Loud National Recitation School Champion for MLWGS. Mary-Dryden will represent MLWGS school at the regional competition in February. Runner-up Leigh Norman (’17, Chesterfield) will represent the school in the event that Mary-Dryden is unable to attend.

The school-wide competition began with classroom contests. The other classroom contestants this year were Sonja Linton (’17, Henrico), Ivan Marshall (’19), Josie Ladle (’16, Henrico), Anthony Holden (‘16), Ogene Anene (’16, Henrico), and Ryan Kaplan (’19, Henrico). School coordinator, Michele Surat, was assisted by teachers Ed Coleman, Cynthia Losen, Kerry Sheppard, John Piersol, and Jessica Bradley. Poet and librarian, Wendy DeGroat also helped with the judging.

National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) provides merit-based scholarships to U.S. high school students and recent graduates interested in learning less-commonly studied foreign languages overseas
